Meet the Driver: Matt White

Q: Do you recall when you joined Total Nonstop Racing?

A: Had to have been in 2008. That was a while back. It was one of those leagues I found when running LNR in the Cup Series. I remember driving the #23 car.

Q: Do you have any favorite memories from our time as a NR2003 league?

A: Oh, plenty. First time I ever dumped a driver in an online race (Sean!), but the racing was similar to LNR.

Q: Many years have passed since we all raced together. Has anything of note happened in your life since then that you’d like to share?

A: Had children, been honestly super rough at times with life and took several gaming absences, but I’ve come back to it.

Q: Many have labeled you as one of the most experienced iRacers in our league, if not the most experienced. Can you talk about how you got started iRacing and what your experience has been like?

A: I started iRacing officially in April 2011. After that, I took a bit of a hiatus when life got in the way and I was racing NR2003. When I came back, I was eager to get into the swing of things and I found that NR2003 had really died off. NR2003 had struggled even when I raced it in 2007, but the support nosedived and most leagues started taking place on iRacing. That’s when I hopped over and really have never looked back. I took a couple breaks when life forced me to; but as of now, I have been back for about 18 months. Overall, I am pretty much right where I started via iRating, about 3,000. I used to race a lot, and iRacing has constantly been changing. It didn’t affect me much until I started racing open setups. I have gotten pretty good with them. Although I have tenure in iRacing, in my eyes what iRacing does is bring people together, but I struggle to find community in both open lobbies and sometimes leagues. I have had highlights in iRacing. I have beat Dale Jr and raced ENASCAR Champions like Ray Alfalla and Zack Novak and have sometimes prevailed. Honestly though, iRacing is the best NASCAR related platform for online competition. I don’t say that as a sales plug, but nobody else comes close.

Q: You weren’t able to make the race at Charlotte. Do you plan on making some starts with us this season?

A: I do. I actually mistimed the qualifying. I hopped on at 8 CST and was like, Where is the session? That’s when I had seen Chris was already racing only to realize it was 8 EST which put me at 7 CST, so huge mistake. I love Charlotte in the ARCA car (22nd overall fastest on the service). So I screwed up the timing a bit.

Q: If and when you are finally able to race with us, what are your expectations?

A: Honestly some good fast, clean racing. I mean, I compete. That’s the ultimate draw to NASCAR for me and sim racing: The ability to compete and have all the same feelings and emotion as a driver on Sunday but to not have to worry about the repair bill. One thing that other games don’t give me is passing for the lead with 3 to go knowing I fried my tires to get there while having the eNASCAR current champ on my tail and attempting to hold him off in what he does for a living and all the emotion that goes along with that. I can’t get that in Call of Duty.
